Surplus Crop Gleaning

Harvesting what would otherwise be left behind.

(Coming soon! This project in development)

image of one arm from each side joining in the middle to shake hands. Both arms are dressed in flannel shirts and hands are dirty. A vegetable crop field is the backdrop. The words "Gleaning. Working with Small-Scale Farms to Reduce Food Waste" is superimposed on the top of the image.

Gleaning is the practice of collecting surplus crops from farms after harvest — food that is perfectly edible but may not be economically viable to sell.

This program is in development, and we are approaching it slowly and respectfully, building relationships with local growers who want their food to feed people rather than return to the soil unused.

Our approach

  • Small-scale, invitation-based partnerships
  • Clear communication with farmers
  • Volunteer education and food-safety awareness
  • Distribution through trusted local channels

We believe gleaning should support farmers, not burden them.

Are you a small-scale farmer in Durham Region who may be interested in exploring a gleaning partnership with the Green Bean Collective?
